Remineralizing Toothpaste and Mouth Wash

Homemade Remineralizing Toothpaste Ingredients:

§  1 part Diatomaceous Earth (optional- contains trace minerals and silica. UPDATE: A reader noted that DE can be abrasive and is not needed with the baking soda, so if you don’t have DE… no worries!)

§  2 parts Baking Soda

§  3 parts Xylitol Powder- This ingredient is not completely necessary, but just keeps it from tasting bitter.

§  3-5 parts coconut oil to get desired texture

§  Optional ingredients: Essential oils for flavor (mint, cinnamon, and orange are all good), Grapefruit Seed Extract, Myrrh and Trace Minerals,

Because I have to do it my way.  I mixed all the powered ingredients and then just used enough to make maybe 2 oz.  Mixing it with coconut oil and the trace minerals. I also used about 1/2 the xylitol it called for.

[Note: To keep things simple, I just use a teaspoon or tablespoon, depending on the size batch I'm making, so the above recipe would read 5 TBSP calcium powder, 2 TBSP Baking Soda, etc.]

How To Make Natural Remineralizing Toothpaste

1. Mix all powdered ingredients (calcium, Baking Soda, Xylitol) well in a bowl. If you are starting with calcium tablets, powder them in a food processor. If you are starting with capsules, dump them out into the bowl.

2. Add Coconut Oil one part at a time until you get desired consistency.

3. Add any optional ingredients, including Essential Oils for flavor (my favorite is Peppermint Orange)
4. Store in small container like 1/2 pint glass jar. To use, either dip clean toothbrush into it, or use Popsicle stick or spoon to put on toothbrush.

How to Make Homemade Mouthwash that Whitens and Remineralizes

Ingredients:

Oils I used: 3 On Guard, 1Melaleuca, 3 Myrrh, 3 Peppermint, 2 Basil, 1 Oregano  I filled a travel size plastic bottle, (2 oz. maybe) then added above oils and amounts.   I also had the DE out so I added a spoon full of that to the mix.

Directions:

  1. In a large glass mixing cup, stir together the calcium powder and xylitol crystals.
  2. Add liquid minerals and essential oils.
  3. Add water and stir.
  4. Pour mixture into a glass bottle (I reused an old apple cider vinegar bottle).
  5. Close the lid tightly and shake ingredients together for about 30-60 seconds so the xylitol dissolves.
  6. Shake well before using.
  7. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Why These Ingredients?

Calcium carbonate powder: for remineralizing teeth

Xylitol crystals: for sweetness and cavity protection

Concentrated trace minerals liquid: for remineralizing teeth

Peppermint essential oil: for flavor and fresh breath

Lemon essential oil: for whiter, brighter teeth

Spearmint essential oil: for flavor and fresh breath

Essential Oil Playing...

Today I took a jar of my Naked Salve, broke out the postal scales and started playing.  That jar weighed 4.2 oz. jar included.  Empty jar was 2.6 oz.  Meaning I had about 1.6 oz. of Naked salve.  I then added .8 oz. of shea butter and .8 oz. of cocoa butter.   I also added 1 more tablespoon of beeswax pastilles.  Then I melted everything.

Once it was melted I added about 10 drops of Lavender, 8 of Lemon and 6 of Melaleuca to the mix.  to my small sample/travel size jars I added three drops of Myrrh to each of the brown ones, 3 of peppermint to the blue ones and 3 of geranium to the red.   This matched up with the color labels for each of them making it easier to keep it straight in my head.   Now they are cooling.

I will let you know what I think of each kind.  I added Myrrh because in reading it is good for eczema, and peppermint from the idea below for skin allergies, the geranium I used last time and my hands are better using it.

In the future I want to do one for pain only adding black pepper since I don't have all the oils below.  I do know that black pepper helps with muscle pain for some of my bunch and frankincense is healing.

Baby Steps or Leaps Fwd.

Today I watched my almost 18 yo work on supper.  She decided on Beef stroganoff when mom vetoed what she has done the last three times.   She didn't do it totally right but she did it.  She remembered she needed rice to go with it and ask how to do that.  I told her double water to rice, if she used one cup rice then two cups water, cook 40 minutes.   Simple steps to life, steps she couldn't even dream of a year ago.  She also popped pop corn today.  Not stick in the microwave but add oil and corn and pop.  I also hear her vocabulary growing.  Several times I have heard her use .25 words CORRECTLY instead of .05 words that may or may not be used correctly.  She is also reading more and more of the chapter books from the library.  They are about 5th grade level reading but that is huge to me in a year!

Bug boy is also doing baby steps. We still have long hard days of lots of battles.  He will battle for 4-5 hours over NOT doing school the way I ask.  "It's hard!"  "I will NEVER..."  Then after the long battle it is done MY way and wow he is SOOOOOOOOO proud of what HE did.  I have discovered that time out bottles really help him/me.  He has a habit of running his mouth when he is sitting on the stool.  "How long, why...!!!!" and the list goes on and on.   I have learned park him shake a time out bottle and tell him to sit quiet until it settles.  He argues I re-shake.  About the third shake he decides to hush.   It is a win win for both of us.

One new thing he ask that none of the others have ask is if I would pray with him at night before bed.  I anoint his head with frankincense and we pray.  Last night he ask me to tap him as I prayed.  I found that interesting.  He has also been telling me when he feels sad sometimes and we use EMDR, (tapping) to help it go away.   I think he figured out that it helps and rolled it into prayer at night.

We are getting close to adoption and having a lot of trying to push away, not attach, issues.  It is hard.  He is afraid.  He doesn't want to not be adopted, but he has TWO failed adoption attempts behind him.  I do think once the adoption is final he will be better behaved.  There will be less trying to not let himself love.  I hope less arguing about EVERY tiny thing.  Like dishes tonight.   Grrrr!   It gets VERY old.   He just got parked because he doesn't want to do dishes alone.  He missed the part about HELPING with supper or you get dishes alone.   He tried telling me he "helped".  Funny I missed that part of the evening.   So he got parked for slamming dishes.  He ask if he could do them later I said we would consider. Then he ask for a time out bottle.  We will see.   For him though he has had a good day.   School is FINALLY caught up, he fought it all weekend.

Supper was very good.  Not anything like the way it usually taste but very good.   I am proud of her for doing it with no help.   She put food away and bug boy will do the dishes.  She didn't make a lot of extras even though he would like to believe she did.   SOOOO many dishes!!!

Christmas

We don't do Christmas as most of America does.  I think the second year we had adopted children I canceled Christmas because of the spirit of gimmy that was flowing so.  I discovered it was WONDERFUL!  We have instead done things like Angel Tree.  We have bought food for a family and gifts but it was not received right.  They expected it the next year, even called and ASK if we were.  Back to the spirit of gimmy I was trying to get rid of.

This year I was asking God what to do and came up with the idea of giving $10 Wal-Mart cards to who ever we felt led.  So each time we are in town I give the 4 big kids a card each and say bless someone, they pray and look and give.

First week I only had three big kids.  I hand the cards out as we were getting ready to check out.  They took off as 11 yos and I checked out.   In a few minutes 17yo came  back glowing.  She had given her card to a mom with a little kid.  The lady was thrilled with it she said.  We talked about how it felt to give.  About that time this lady came toward 17 yo like she knew her all smiles, long lost friend type.  I was trying to figure out how she knew her.  She gave her a big hug and walked off.  It was the woman she had given the card too!!!!   She had a maybe 2 yo in her cart.

Then 14 yo son came with his story. He had picked an older woman and shared what we were doing.  Seems she questioned him up and down about why and why he didn't spend it on himself.  I would have loved to have saw the look on his face at that.  I know he would have looked shocked.   She finally took it and told him to have a Merry Christmas and she was going to bless someone that needed it more than her with the card.  Then gave him a hug.

Next came 12, now 13 yo DD.  She also gave it to an older woman.  She got hugged and told thank you.  All three glowed!

This week was even more special  I gave 4 cards out and 13 yo circled Wal-Mart 4 times and couldn't find who to give it too. As we were leaving the parking lot there was a lady waiting at the bus stop. She was on a scooter with bags sitting at her feet.  Her back was toward the wind huddled down in her coat.  Wind chill was in the teens I would guess.  I turned around and ask if she still had her card.  She jumped out went over gave the card to the lady told her what we were doing, got a hug and came back saying the lady cried.  It was moving and sobering for all the kids.

What I love is the kids can't wait to give again.  The first week they were a bit nervous about doing it.  The second week they were grabbing at cards!   They couldn't wait!  They talked about it all week.  I am now wondering about doing this monthly as part of our tithe.  It is such a blessing for my kids to do this.   I know $10 isn't huge, but it is something.  It could buy milk or diapers or formula or beans.   I love how my kids glow in doing it.
